Nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, 15 minutes' drive from the golden sands of Georgioupoli is Lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake in the Greek isles. It is one kilometre in length and breadth, and its clean blue water is a delight to swim in. A choice of tavernas are available from which to enjoy the glistening charm of the lake whilst partaking in a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.
The lake is a refreshing and peaceful alternative to the seaside and many prefer its calm and tranquil waters. On Sundays it is a popular meeting place for local families.
