The island's geographical location is responsible for its climactic range with mild winters and warm summers cooled by a system of seasonal breezes popularly called "meltemia". Zakynthos has a typically Mediterranean climate. Due to the high level of rainfall in the winter, Zakynthos is considerably greener than many other Greek islands and has a climate favourable for the cultivation of olives, citrus fruits and vines. Due to the geology of the island, Zakynthos has a number of underground springs
